The paper
Our reference paper is Hahnemühle German Etching; prints are made on it or on an equivalent museum-grade 310 gsm etching paper with the same weight, surface and archival quality. Hahnemühle has made artists' paper in Dassel, Germany, since 1584, and German Etching is one of its classic fine art papers: mould-made, meaning the sheet forms slowly on a cylinder mould, which gives it the felt-like texture and stability of a hand-made paper. It is made from alpha-cellulose - pure cellulose with the lignin removed, the part of wood that makes ordinary paper yellow and brittle - and meets ISO 9706, the international standard for permanent paper.
Its warm white and velvety surface suit watercolours and paintings especially well: colours stay rich and soft, never glossy.
Giclée printing
Giclée (from the French for "spray") is the fine-art way of printing: a high-resolution printer lays down microscopic drops of pigment ink - solid particles, far more resistant to light than the dye inks of ordinary printers. The result: smooth gradients, deep colour, and a print that won't fade when displayed indoors, away from direct sunlight.
Framing and care
- Frame behind glass or acrylic (UV-filtering is best), with or without a mat.
- If your print arrives rolled, let it rest flat for a day - under a clean book - before framing.
- Handle by the edges with clean, dry hands; hang away from direct sun, heaters and damp.
